Banking Information

It should be pointed out that banks in Spain usually open from around 8:30 AM till 1:30 or 2 PM, and only Monday through Friday. There exist two usual types of banks: one is a standard bank and another is a typical credit union. Anyone of them would provide for your need. For a currency exchange, you need to present your passport. Almost all bank and credit union offices have automated teller machines (cash dispensers) that work 24 hrs a day, and you can use both your credit cards and your debit cards there.

Credit Cards

Most stores (with the exception of some smaller shops), supermarkets, restaurants, bars, and other businesses in Spain accept credit cards, though it is not so common that people pay very small amounts (e.g., 5-6 Euro) using a credit card. Some taxi cabs may accept debit cards.

For those who will give a talk

In the room C-0, you will have three whiteboards with coloured pens and the possibility to connect your laptop with the projector (or bring your PDF in a pendrive). You can also project your slides, but please inform us as soon as possible if you want to do so, because we have only one slide-projector. Notice that projecting something you cover one of the whiteboards.

In the room C-405, you will have a large blackboard with white and coloured chalks, and the same possibility of projecting PDF or slides (again, inform us if you need the slide-projector). In case you project something, you cover approximatively two meters of the 4-meters blackboard, and you can use one meter at the left, and one at the right of the projected image.

Travelling around...

The region of Madrid has a temperate Mediterranean climate with cold winters that experience temperatures lower than 0 °C (32 °F). Precipitation levels are low, but precipitation can be observed all throughout the year. Summer and winter are the driest seasons, with most rainfall occurring in the autumn and spring.

You are near and with easy communication with the historical cities in the centre of the peninsula, such as Segovia, Avila, Toledo, el Escorial or Salamanca

Madrid

In spite of the fact that Madrid is a large city, finding your way around ends up not being so difficult as long as you keep a series of coordinates in mind:

For the visitor, the main point of reference is the Puerta del Sol (the Gateway of the Sun) (where your hotel is). It marks the center of the city and the starting point to see the majority of its sites. The Puerta del Sol is surrounded by the old city (casco antiguo), in which you will find several must-see spots such as the Plaza Mayor (Main Square), the monastery known as "Monasterio de las Descalzas", the Plaza de la Villa or the Palacio Real (the Royal Palace).

Near the Puerta del Sol you will find the Gran Vía, one of the city's principal roads. The Gran Vía runs from the Plaza de España to Alcalá street, which itself takes you to the Parque del Retiro.

Another fundamental point of reference of the city would be axis of the street Paseo de la Castellana which in turn becomes the Paseo de Recoletos and the Paseo del Prado. The origin of this road could be considered the Plaza de Atocha, where you will find the train station, and the end then would be found in the Plaza de la Castilla, which is clearly recognizable for the Puerta de Europa, which is marked by the visually impressive Kio Towers. On this axis we will find the great museums of the city (Prado, Thyssen-Bornemizsa, Reina Sofía, Natural Sciences, etc., most of them are free on wednesday) as well as some of its most important plazas (Cibeles, Neptuno, Colón, etc.).

We could define the borders of the main part to visit by the area formed by linking the points of Moncloa, Atocha and Retiro. Within this large area, the majority of monuments and points of interest can be located.
